(Lanka-e-News -11.Sep.2015, 9.30PM) The maiden session of the constitutional council appointed by the 100 days interim government after the 8 th parliament came into being was held today chaired by the speaker in his official chamber.
This meeting was attended by the speaker , Prime minister (P.M.) , Dr. Wijedasa Rajapakse , Patalie Champika Ranawaka and W.D. J. Senevirathne .
The speaker had drawn attention to the necessity to appoint the members of the constitutional council most speedily as there had been delays, and that it should start functioning as early as possible.
It has been decided that the appointment of members to the constitutional council should be expedited , and nominations from political party leaders , trade union and civil organizations shall be called. The constiututional council is slated to meet again on 21 st and 23 rd September.
Dr. A.T Ariyaratne , , Dr. Radhika Kumaraswamy and President’s counsel Shibly Azeez , a former Attorney general have been proposed as representatives of civil society for the constitutional council . These three names are to be tabled in parliament for its approval on September 22 nd.
