Reveal the truth without playing into the hands of extremists- President and P.M. urge at media chiefs’ meeting

(Lanka-e-News - 19.Sep.2015, 5.00PM)  When  the  extremist forces of the country are engaged in a futile effort to mislead the people , it is a paramount duty of the media Institutions to convey the correct picture of the government’s policies , said president Maithripala Sirisena when addressing a media briefing with the participation of media chiefs at the presidential secretariat yesterday (18). This media briefing was attended by the prime minister , foreign minister , media minister and the minister of justice.

The president went on to point out  , when the media are making analyses regarding the United nations human rights commission (UNHRC) report , nothing has been mentioned about the government’s policies and the government’s determined unrelenting efforts that paved the way  to such a lenient attitude to be  taken by the  UNHRC .It is also the duty of the non governmental media to disseminate correct well balanced information among the public , he added.

As regards finding solutions for the human rights issues , the government has a long way to go. Since a complex and knotty  situation is confronted  , the issues  have to be duly identified , and the new government must march ahead on its new journey , the president emphasized.

If the previous government had been in power , the situation to be faced would have been most grave , which fact cannot be blinked, however hard one may try.Hence this present report cannot be criticised at our own whims and fancies. If it had come out before the 8 th of January , the issues  to be faced by the country would have been most drastic ,the president elaborated.

With the new government introducing the 19 th amendment to the constitution , and the appointment of the independent commission , the world is taking a favorable attitude towards Sri Lanka (SL) . The leniency shown via this present report is a sequel to those actions taken by the new government . On the contrary , if this report was to emerge before  , the government would have had to face serious problems . But now, the situation is different in view of the leniency shown , the president emphasized .

The foreign policy of the present government is to create cordial and friendly ties with all States and races. This had reaped rich dividends during the short period in office , with the result the motherland had been able to achieve a great victory internationally.

The government has taken no action in pursuance of the CEPA agreement nor discussed it , though certain groups based on cheap political selfish agendas are critical .

P.M. Ranil Wickremesinghe speaking on the occasion said , he did not make the Indian tour to sign the CEPA agreement , and that was not the aim of his tour.

It is  the duty of the media to highlight the efforts and the contributions  made by the present government to soften the attitude of the UNHRC and make it take a favorable view towards SL , the P.M. pinpointed.

Meanwhile , the General secretary to the UN , Ban Ki Moon had sent a message of appreciation in respect of the government’s response to the UNHRC report.  Moon had mentioned in his message that he is ready to extend his support to the SL government’s progams to establish permanent peace and stability in accord with the recommendations made in the report . Moreover his assistance is always there to the efforts taken by the government acting with full responsibility to respect human rights, as well as the reconciliation processes undertaken to establish racial harmony.  Moon has also urged the government and the people of SL , at a time when the international community’s support and blessings are with the government , that valuable climate created shall be continued in the future.
