(Lanka-e-News -23.Sep.2015, 9.00PM) The invitation extended by the representatives of the fisheries association of India to come there to resolve the issue of Indian fishermen forcibly encroaching on the Sri Lanka northern territorial sea with their trawlers was rejected by the Sri Lanka northern fishermen’s society .
Vinayagamoorthy Sahadevan , the patron of the northern fishermen’s society said , when discussions at length between the prime ministers of Sri Lanka (SL) and India had failed, it is their conviction , the efforts of leaders of ordinary fishermen’s associations to resolve this issue is meaningless , and this is why the invitation was rejected.
At least , if a group of responsible officers of the SL government will join with the leaders of the fisheries societies who are visiting India then that delegation will have some power , status and validity . Whereas , simply discussions held between the leaders of the fishermen’s societies of the two countries will be of no avail , and no solution can be found ,Sahadevan pointed out.
An issue that could not be resolved by discussions held between two powerful leaders of the two countries , cannot be expected to be solved by leaders of fishermen’s societies . It is like groping in the dark, Sahadevan observed.
Sahadevan regretted that so far the report pertaining to the discussions held in India between the leaders of the two countries and the outcome , had not been made available to the SL fishermen’s society.
The northern fishermen’s society has decided to have a first round of talks with the SL government officials and the fisheries officers regarding the overtures made by the Indian fishermen’s society , Sahadevan added.
SL southern fishermen’s society representatives are to be invited for this round of talks , Sahadevan further noted.
