Right to information bill before parliament next week

(Lanka-e-News- 18.Oct.2015, 5.00PM) The long awaited ‘Right to information bill’ that was earnestly anticipated by the Democracy loving masses is to be tabled before the cabinet  next week , a chief in charge of its draft preparation Dr. Jayampathy Wickremeratne M.P. revealed to Lanka e news.

This bill which is currently receiving its final legal touches will be presented to the cabinet next week , and thereafter presented to the provincial councils (PC) , the M.P. noted, while adding that , since this right to information bill is important to the PCs , it is hoped the PCs will not oppose the bill.

This right to information bill was tabled as private members bill in parliament by Karu Jayasuriya when the UNP was in the opposition. However , the  Rajapakse regime at that time treated it most disdainfully and relegated it to  the garbage heap.

Dr. Jayampathy who also  represents   the team preparing the new constitution , said within a year  the new constitution can be presented. Since   it is not possible to predict political changes, getting the constitution passed within the first year will be best in the interests of all parties.
