(Lanka-e-News -29.Jan.2016, 11.30PM) The motion filed in Homagama court requesting bail for Gnanassara the hooligan robed monk who was remanded on charges of contempt of court was dismissed on the grounds that there aren’t adequate reasons cited to grant bail. The magistrate Ranga Dissanayake setting an example in courage to other judges , said , even if a pistol is pointed at his head he would not change the decison he delivered.
‘If there is flaw on my part , inform the superior officers. I think this is a trial I should not hear. I have in fact sought Attorney General’s advice. I hope by the next date of trial , his response will be received from him,’ the magistrate observed.
The Sri Lanka Bar Association revealed , Gnanassara and his hooligan team of disgraceful monks are to be charged under contempt of court in the appeal court, and measures are being taken in that direction. Because two cases cannot be simultaneously heard based on the same indictment , it is hoped the Homagama court will transfer this case to the appeal court by that time , lawyers pointed out.
In a magistrate court the maximum punishment that can be imposed if found guilty on contempt of court charges ,is 6 months in jail, whereas in the appeal court a jail sentence of 7 years can be imposed.
