(Lanka-e-News- 09.March.2016, 11.30PM) Cabinet minister for fisheries ,and water resource development , Mahinda Amaraweera was appointed as the UPFA general secretary .This post fell vacant following the demise of former general secretary Professor Vishva Warnakula while Minister Susil Premajayantha the former general secretary was appointed as the Vice president of the party. These appointments were made by president Maithripala Sirisena this evening .
Mahinda Aamraweera who was born in 1962 , is 54 years old . His native place is Udayala Agunakolapelessa. He is an old boy of Dickwella Vijitha Maha Vidyala , and represented Hambantota district the fortress of Rajapakses. He entered parliament for the first time in 1994 polling 39367 votes from Hambantota under the Podhujana Eksath Peramuna. He had been a parliamentary member since.
It is specially significant to note during the most corrupt Rajapakse era , strangely , Amaraweera managed to steer clear of corruption charges.
