9 hour power failure Islandwide !-country plunged in darkness; Ambatale pumping station also fails

(Lanka-e-News -14.March.2016, 10.00PM)  Following a nine hour Island wide power failure the whole country was plunged in darkness! This was the first time such a 9 hour long power failure paralysed the country. Owing to the absence of electricity , the Ambatale pumping station too ground to a halt . Consequently , the water supply too had to be discontinued.  It was at  about 11.30 in the night on yesterday the situation returned to normal.

On 25 th February there was an Islandwide power failure , and after 17 days ,  the power failure again occurred yesterday beginning at about 2.30 p.m.

Initially the Sapugaskande power generating plant  collapsed yasterday , and after the national grid failing to function  due to this collapse , the Norochcholai power producing plant also came to a halt.

For 9 hours the power generator could not be restored to its original state because of the Electricity Board Engineers’ mafia , it is learnt. For some time because of the engineers’ mafia that operated against the technical officers , and undercut them , the trainee technical officers resigned their jobs , and left.

The chief technical officer who was in charge of the Sapugaskande power generating plant also left the job . In an instance when there is a sudden power failure , it is the responsibility of the Technical officers who rectify the faults , and not the engineers.

By now though the engineers have intervened to revive the power generator , they had been unsuccessful. The Technical officers claim that they can bring  the situation back to normal if they are given permission with security detail to enter Norochcholai .

Meanwhile , the chairman of the Ceylon electricty board , Anura Senaka Wijepala said he is ashamed over the Islandwide power failure , and as soon as power is restored he is resigning his post .

Following the power failure there were traffic snarls and severe vehicular traffic congestion within the capital city. One of the reasons for this was the residents staying put within their vehicles . The photograph depicts the severe traffic congestion of vehicles along Galle road , Colombo.

During the past , on two occasions there were power failures , consequent upon which the consumers of electricity were subjected to tremendous inconvenience .The minister of power and energy Ranjith Siyambalapitiya has expressed his regrets and tendered his apologies in this regard when addressing an emergency media briefing convened in Kegalle.
