-Jaffna commander in chief Major Gen. Mahesh Senanayake in a historic speech (video)
(Lanka-e-News- 13.June.2016, 10.00PM) Not even for many more years to come but even in the next life will there be a war in Sri Lanka again, Jaffna commander in chief Major Gen. Mahesh Senanayake assured in a historic speech, while adding the main task of the forces lastday is organizing peace and harmony .
It is four months ago I came to Jaffna , but only today (11) I am addressing the public , Senanayake said when addressing a media briefing lastday (11) in Jaffna. Senanayake went on to make a number of emotion loaded and important announcements..
''I am sure all of you have been a part of the country’s internal security . During the hartal period and the insurrection you all have done your part and It was you all who paved the way for the forces to come here . Unfortunately in the north and East region a bloody war was fought for 30 years. It was not to serve the interest of the army. It was in the political interest of a section of the people . They did not meet us. They were at a distance . That was a big mistake.
Now , after defeating the terrorists the time has come for us to be with all of you , to talk to all of you , look after all of you and look after your welfare . An opportunity is now at the doorstep to fulfill the obligations towards you all ,your families and grandchildren. Unfortunately you all could not enjoy your retirement . Your children could not enjoy the peace . It is time for us to transform the fragile peace to a solid permanent peace. That is why I wanted to speak to you all and be with you all.
We fought and emerged victorious to usher in peace. We are a victorious army , a victorious Navy ,a victorious Air Force and a victorious police service..
It is very unfortunate that some are trying to grab away this victory with a different agenda, but that will not succeed , neither will the people be carried away by those attempts. We are here to assist the public and the people who suffered for 30 years, as brothers and sisters of north and East. You all have worked during the war or in the essential services . My responsibility as a security commander is to ensure that the peace that prevails continues , so that there will be no war for many thousand years to come , or may be for many athmas (lives) to come .To assist in the civil administration . To take over administration of this peninsular and be a part of the administration like in the other parts of the country .My main effort today is aimed at reconciliation. Reconciliation shall be understood and be implemented to the letter to ensure that we are here for reconciliation and peace. In this endeavor I believe I have a role to play , and our senior officers and soldiers of the army, Navy , Air force and police have a role to play. I humbly request all of you to co operate with our detachments , bases etc. and guide us. Teach us, educate us and make your requests. We are always here to help the civil administration . There are cultural gaps , generation gap and so forth but we should narrow those gaps , and in time to come there should be no gaps at all.
I reiterate that it is the prime and primary responsibility of the forces to establish peace and maintain it coupled with harmony and amity.''

The primary responsibility of the military is to keep the country safe from foreign and internal organized military forces. We as a country faced the violence dispensed by LTTE for 30 some years. Enough is enough, and do not leave any room for it to raise the ugly head again! Do not bend to political pressure and for your job. Do not harm the innocent Tamil people, but pursue all who try to disrupt the peace and harmony.

it is dangerous when military leaders (they should leave that to elected leaders) start giving political speeches. Sri Lankan army is getting into all kinds of businesses where it is getting away from the primary duty of defending the country. This reminds me of Pakistan where the army has become more powerful than the elected governments. If we continue, we could be heading that way.
SL is broke and in a debt trap. Instead of cutting the military expenditure, the country is looking at spending $100 of millions in new military aircraft as soon as the IMF $1.5bn loan is finalized.
Sounds crazy to me! Current leadership should looking into Greece to learn what excessive debt can do to a country. But they behave as they know everything.
