-Deshabandhu Karu Jayasuriya

(Lanka-e-News -19.Aug.2021, 11.00PM)  We are paying close attention to the arrest of Lanka e News journalist Keerthi Ratnayake by the police. According to his lawyers, the police have not specified anything that led to the arrest of Keerthi Ratnayake. But it is only stated that he was arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

It is a very dangerous trend. Therefore, we urge those responsible, including the police, to first reveal to the country the reasons for the arrest of Keerthi Ratnayake. Also, if there is an allegation that can be made against him, it should be informed and referred to a court. Otherwise he should be released.

According to his lawyers and media reports, the reason for Keerthi Ratnayake's arrest was about informing the security measures of a foreign embassy. If so it is communication of a message.

If so, it could be considered as an arrest of a messenger. Such an arrest is particularly surprising under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. It is also an unjust action. It is an anti-democratic act. It is a dictatorial process.

Such incidents come as a shock to us considering the tragic fate that has befallen many journalists in this country in the recent past. It also raises the question of whether such actions are manifestations of dark foreshadows. Therefore, the whole society should pay close attention to this.

Therefore, we call on those responsible, including the police, to ensure the safety of Keerthi Ratnayake. Also, if there is a reasonable charge against him, he should be produced before the court immediately. Otherwise, he should be released immediately.
