Chinese Communist Delegation Meets with JVP General Secretary in Colombo

(Lanka-e-News -30.April.2025, 11.00 PM) In a development underscoring the strengthening ties between Beijing and Sri Lanka’s emerging leftist coalition, a high-level delegation from the Communist Party of China (CPC) met with Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary Tilvin Silva at the party’s headquarters in Colombo today (April 30).

The delegation, comprising senior officials from the CPC’s International Department and representatives from the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka, extended their congratulations to the National People's Power (NPP) alliance for its recent electoral victory. The visiting dignitaries commended the administration of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake—elected in a sweeping popular mandate last September—for what they described as “progressive reforms” and a “refreshing transformation” in Sri Lanka’s political culture.

A key focus of the discussions was the potential for deepening cooperation between the CPC and the JVP, as well as enhancing bilateral ties between China and Sri Lanka more broadly. The talks, which sources describe as "cordial and strategic," also touched on avenues for Chinese support in uplifting the living standards of Sri Lanka’s rural population—an area where China’s development model and resources could play a pivotal role.

In a gesture of goodwill, the Chinese delegation donated a selection of books—curated by the CPC—to the JVP’s party library, symbolising the ideological camaraderie between the two leftist movements.

Present at the meeting were prominent Sri Lankan cabinet members from the NPP government, including Bimal Rathnayake, Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation; Sunil Kumara Gamage, Minister of Youth and Sports; and attorney-at-law Janaka Adhikari, a senior figure in the JVP Central Committee.

Representing the Chinese side were Peng Xiubin, Director General of the Bureau of South and Southeast Asian Affairs within the CPC’s International Department; Deputy Director Chen Xuanbo; staff members Chen Yongpei and Zhang Guyu; Professor Xiao Yacheng from Southwest University; and Jin Enze, Third Secretary of the Chinese Embassy in Colombo.

The delegation is also scheduled to attend the May Day celebrations hosted by the NPP, further cementing a growing rapport between the Chinese Communist Party and Sri Lanka’s new left-wing leadership.
