(Lanka-e-News -13.May.2025, 11.45 PM) President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has been presented with four nominations to fill two upcoming vacancies in Sri Lanka’s Court of Appeal.
Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya has submitted three of the names in two separate rounds of recommendations. The nominees are High Court Judges Frank Gunawardena, Adithya Kumara Patabendi, and Navaratna Marasinghe. The fourth nomination, that of Deputy Solicitor General Riyaz Bari, has been proposed by Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam.
Of the four, the President is expected to forward two names to the Constitutional Council for approval.
The two vacancies arise from the impending retirements of senior appellate judges. The current President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Nishshanka Bandula Karunaratne, is presently on mandatory leave ahead of his scheduled retirement on June 16. Acting President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Mohammed Laffar, is also due to retire shortly thereafter on June 18.
In a separate development aimed at easing the burden on the lower judiciary, the Judicial Service Commission has recruited 50 new judicial officers to address the growing number of vacancies in the Magistrate Courts. Of these, 46 will be appointed as Magistrates, while the remaining four will serve as Presidents of Labour Tribunals.
Meanwhile, the Attorney General’s Department is facing a shortfall in its senior ranks, with four vacancies currently open for the position of Additional Solicitor General. The frontrunners for these appointments are Senior Deputy Solicitor Generals Hiran Peiris, Asad Nawavi, Lakmali Karunanayake, and Sudarshana de Silva.
