(Lanka-e-News -02.June.2025, 11.30 PM) In a landmark victory for Sri Lanka, Canada’s Supreme Court has decisively ruled that claims of a “Tamil genocide” cannot be included in provincial school curricula—striking a blow to years of pro-LTTE propaganda. This judgement marks a pivotal moment in countering the diaspora-driven misinformation campaign that has long painted Sri Lanka with the brush of war crimes.
The legal battle was led not by a government or lobby, but by a courageous individual—Dr Neville Hewage, a Sri Lankan academic at Laurentian University in Ontario. With no official backing from Colombo, Dr Hewage launched a constitutional challenge against Ontario’s 2022 Tamil Genocide Education Week Act (TGEWA), which allowed the “genocide” narrative to be taught in schools.
With support from a Canadian legal team and $350,000 in private funding, Dr Hewage argued the Act violated constitutional boundaries. The Ontario Court of Appeal upheld his claim, declaring TGEWA unconstitutional under Section 93 of the 1867 Constitution Act. The Supreme Court later affirmed this, effectively banning the teaching of a “Tamil genocide” in schools.
The verdict is not merely a personal victory—it is a moment of national vindication for Sri Lanka. As Dr Hewage aptly stated: “Truth prevails. The law has spoken.” (Dr Hewage in the photo)
