Police Commission Member Resigns Days After Husband Questioned by CID

-By LeN Colombo Correspondent

(Lanka-e-News -11.Aug.2025, 11.10 PM) D.K. Renuka Ekanayake, a member of Sri Lanka’s National Police Commission and wife of former presidential secretary Saman Ekanayake, has tendered her resignation from the post. Her letter of resignation has been formally submitted.

The move comes just days after Mr Ekanayake was summoned to the Criminal Investigation Department’s Financial Crimes Division to give a statement regarding allegations of misconduct by President Ranil Wickremesinghe. The investigation concerns a 6.9 million rupee expenditure of public funds on a private trip to the UK in 2023 — ostensibly to attend Mrs Ekanayake’s graduation — which, according to officials, was not part of any official programme.

It is not known whether Mrs Ekanayake’s decision to step down is connected to the CID inquiry or to any disagreement within the commission. A retired ministry secretary, she had served on the National Police Commission since May 2023, having been appointed during Mr Wickremesinghe’s presidency.

The Commission, one of Sri Lanka’s constitutionally established independent bodies, should comprise eight members including its chair, but has operated with one vacancy since her appointment. Her departure leaves two seats unfilled.

The current chair is retired Supreme Court Justice E.D.B.M. Lalith Ekanayake. Other members are K. Karunaharan, Dilshan Jayasuriya, A.A.M. Illiyas, Jayanta Jayasinghe and Secretary Tanuja N. Fernando.

The resignation has renewed calls for the formation of a reconstituted Police Commission under a new administration, with political observers noting that public sentiment favours broader reform of independent oversight bodies.
