(Lanka-e-News -2025.Dec.26, 10.30 PM) EPDP leader and former minister Kadiravelu Naithiyananda Devananda alias Douglas Devananda has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department this evening.

This was in connection with the discovery of a pistol given to him by the Army for his personal protection in 2001 in the possession of underworld leader Makandure Madush. In 2019, based on a statement given by Madush, the relevant pistol was found hidden in a forest area near a culvert in the Weliweriya area. According to the serial number of the pistol, it was issued to Douglas Devananda.

When the Criminal Investigation Department, which is investigating the incident, summoned Douglas Devananda to take a statement, he failed to make an acceptable statement regarding how the pistol was misplaced. He was subsequently arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department and is scheduled to be produced in court later.

A leader of a party that carried firearms..

Douglas Devananda, who continuously represented parliament from 1994 until the last 2024 general election, suffered a crushing defeat in the last parliamentary election. He and the EPDP, which he led, are a political party with armed men who have carried firearms for the past 30 years, despite having come to parliamentary democracy. It is no secret that those firearms have been fired in the North as well as in the South for the various needs of different governments at different times. He was given cover by the fact that he was an anti-LTTE.

Devananda is a wanted person in India and is also a declared convict by India for charges of murder, attempt to murder, rioting, unlawful assembly and kidnapping.
