(Lanka-e-News -29.Dec.2025, 3.15 PM) Police investigators who were hunting the killers of Ambalangoda businessman Hiran Kosala de Silva, who was shot dead by an unknown assailant recently, have stopped in front of a mansion built in the Ankumbura area of Kandy.
The reason for this is that the investigators have discovered that the owner of the mansion is former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon, who was described by the Attorney General’s Department as the ‘godfather’ of the underworld.
This remarkable discovery was made during the operation launched by the Criminal Investigation Department to find the shooters who shot Hiran Kosala de Silva, the owner of the Ambalangoda Singer outlet, who was contesting for the position of Chairman of the Ambalangoda Municipal Council from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya party, who was murdered last week.
The police have so far arrested six people, including a woman, who are said to have assisted in the murder, and two firearms used in the murder. One of them is a close associate of the underworld member named Karandeniya Sudda, named 'Podi Mahaththaya'. During interrogation, it was revealed that a person named 'Anura', who is said to be a contractor for house construction, had hidden the shooter and the motorcyclist involved in the murder in a house in the Ankumbura area of Kandy.
Further investigation by the investigators revealed that this large house was built by the underworld criminal and drug trafficker named 'Karandeniya Sudda' for the ousted corrupt IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon.
The former corrupt IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon, who is currently facing several legal proceedings, has nearly 10 large houses across the country, Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris, who appeared for the Attorney General’s Department in the Weligama W15 Hotel shooting case, told the court.
In addition, the Deputy Solicitor General stated before the parliamentary committee convened to investigate the allegations of misconduct and abuse of power against Deshabandu Tennakoon that Deshabandu Tennakoon is a more dangerous criminal than an underworld criminal.
Another strange fact revealed in the W15 Hotel shooting case was that Deshabandu did not even have a 'bicycle' in his name. Mr. Dileepa Peiris himself had stated this. The house in Athurugiriya where Deshabandu Tennakoon lived with his wife and son was also not in his name, and its ownership was in the hands of another priest who was in the Pirivena with him when Deshabandu was in seclusion.
Although the police informed the court that they would investigate the assets and underworld connections of Deshabandu, who is facing a criminal case for the first time in the Weligama W15 case, the incident of hiding underworld members in this Ankumbura house in Kandy can be cited as the best evidence that the police have not investigated his assets and properties so far.
The fact that the police, who are chasing Singer Kosala's murderers, accidentally received information about this house of Deshabandu is the best evidence for this.
With this revelation, IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya has ordered the investigators investigating the Ambalangoda ''Singer Kosala'' murder to investigate Deshabandu's involvement in this investigation as soon as possible. The IGP has also ordered to obtain Deshabandu's phone records in this regard.
The police reported to the court that 03 mobile phones belonging to Deshabandu were found in Deshabandu's house during the W15 hotel shooting investigations. The police also informed that they will analyse the phones and submit further reports to the court. However, until Deshabandu surrenders to the court for the W15 case, a detailed report has not yet been submitted to the court on the people he was in contact with.
The public has serious doubts that the police under the current IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya will also conduct a full investigation into the underworld connections and assets of former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon.
It was reported last week that the IGP ordered the Police Special Investigation Unit (SIU) to investigate the assets and properties of former and current officers of the Police Narcotics Bureau.
However, it is highly doubtful that a full and impartial investigation will be conducted by the police into the assets and properties of the former IGP or former and current high-ranking officers of the police. The probability of this not happening is higher because the police themselves know very well that most police officials are corrupt.
