(Lanka-e-News -17.April.2026, 3.45 PM) Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Professor Udayanga Hemapala have submitted letters to President Anura Dissanayake this afternoon (17) to allow for an impartial and independent investigation to be conducted by the Special Presidential Commission to examine the process related to coal imports.
Today, President Anura Dissanayake appointed a special Presidential Commission of Inquiry to investigate whether irregularities and illegal acts have occurred in the importation of coal and related electricity generation, and the Minister of Energy and the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry have resigned from their posts in support of the impartial and independent process of the Commission.
In his resignation letter to the President, Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody has stated that he appreciates the President's bold determination to fight corruption and to serve the people's mandate, as evidenced by the decision to appoint a special Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the supply of coal and the submission of a complaint to the Criminal Investigation Department by the Secretary to the President to conduct a formal investigation into coal imports since 2009.
Accordingly, he believes that the investigations to be conducted in the future should be carried out very independently and without any bias, and that his continued presence in the position during the investigation would be an obstacle to that, and therefore he is resigning from the ministerial post with effect from today (17).
Secretary to the Ministry of Energy, Professor Udayanga Hemapala, has indicated in his letter that he believes it is appropriate to resign from the post of Secretary so that it does not hinder the investigations to be initiated in the future and to facilitate the independence of the investigations.
