(Lanka-e-News -2026.July.17, 5.00 PM) Former Inspector General of Police Chandana Deepal Wickramaratne died this morning from a gunshot wound at his residence, according to sources close to the investigation. Police have publicly described the death as a suspected suicide, but details emerging from those present at the scene raise questions that investigators say warrant closer scrutiny.
According to an account from within the household, Wickramaratne had been preparing for his morning physical training routine when he asked the police sergeant assigned to his security detail to show him his service weapon, an MP-22 pistol. The sergeant is said to have handed over the firearm without its magazine. Wickramaratne then asked for the magazine and instructed the sergeant to fill a water bottle. It was while the sergeant was out of the room that a shot was heard. On returning, the sergeant reportedly found the former IGP with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Investigators cited in this account noted that the wound's location is inconsistent with the pattern typically seen in self-inflicted gunshot deaths, where the injury is usually to the head rather than the chest — a detail they say is factoring into the ongoing inquiry.
