(Lanka-e-News -07.Sep.2026,10.30 PM) For the first time since the end of the Second World War, the far-right political force Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) has succeeded in gaining control of a state government in Germany. This marks the first time since Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Party (NSDAP) that a far-right political party has secured regional political power in Germany.
The far-right AfD won the largest number of seats in the election held on September 6 to elect representatives to the Landtag, the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt (Sachsen-Anhalt). The AfD secured 39 of the 83 seats in the Landtag, after winning approximately 44.5 percent of the vote.
Ulrich Siegmund, the AfD’s candidate for Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt, has expressed views that many political commentators argue bear similarities to core ideas associated with Hitler’s Nazi Party. Because of Siegmund’s political positions, including his advocacy of “Remigration,” as well as his links to far-right extremist and fascist networks, he has faced strong criticism and allegations that his ideology bears similarities to the völkisch thinking associated with the Nazi era.
The prominent German magazine Der Spiegel has described Ulrich Siegmund as “the most dangerous man in Germany.” Germany’s domestic intelligence service has classified the AfD as an extremist organization and monitors its activities.
Of the total number of seats in the Landtag, 41 are elected directly from electoral constituencies, while the other 42 seats are distributed according to the proportional system based on the percentage of votes obtained by the parties. Germany is a federal state consisting of 16 states. Each of its states has its own parliament and state government.
Saxony-Anhalt (Sachsen-Anhalt), the state where the AfD, established in 2013, was able to obtain power for the first time, is located in East Germany (GDR), which existed as a separate state from 1949 to 1990. Its capital is Magdeburg. Germany was reunified in 1990, and after that, many of the factories operating in the state of Saxony-Anhalt were closed, while many others were restructured. Because of this, many people lost their jobs, and economic setbacks were created. Particularly, young people left the state and migrated to economically more prosperous western Germany. The current population of Saxony-Anhalt is 2.12 million. Since 2000, nearly 500,000 people from the population have migrated to western Germany, and it is projected that by 2040 the population will decline to 1.83 million.
Due to several factors such as economic backwardness, the rising cost of living, energy prices, the growth of unemployment, the decline in population and the increase in the ageing population due to young people leaving the state, and the housing crisis, opposition to the existing political system has emerged among the people of Saxony-Anhalt. In particular, they accuse the leaders of Germany’s federal government of not paying proper attention to the problems of their state, as well as of neglecting them. In particular, there is a perception among them that the federal government treats East Germans as second-class citizens. It was the AfD party that gained a political advantage from the economic decline and social dissatisfaction in Saxony-Anhalt. They became the political voice of public opposition and dissatisfaction. Some voters voted for AfD to express opposition to traditional parties such as the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the Social Democratic Party (SPD), and the Green Party (Greens). Some political commentators point out that this was a protest vote intended as a reminder to Germany’s major political parties.
In states with lower economic growth, such as Saxony-Anhalt, AfD created a major scapegoat to target the social dissatisfaction and opposition of the people. They were the migrants living in Germany. The AfD party worked to create widespread social hatred by portraying migrants as the sole cause of all the social, economic, and political problems of German citizens. It is no secret that throughout history, fascist, far-right, racist, and nationalist parties such as the AfD have sought to gain power by spreading hatred while targeting a minority social group at times when there is economic decline. Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933 by spreading massive social hatred against Jews living in Germany. Hitler and the leaders of his Nazi Party (NSDAP) repeatedly claimed that Jews were the main reason for the economic collapse Germany faced after its defeat in the First World War. Donald Trump’s fascist, racist MAGA movement gained power in 2016 and 2024 by creating social hatred against Latin American migrants and Muslims.
In 2015, a large number of refugees came to Europe due to the Syrian civil war, conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, ISIS activities, and economic and security crises. While many countries in Europe rejected these refugees, Germany agreed to accept around one million people as refugees. During August–September 2015, Germany followed a relatively open policy regarding refugees, including Syrians. The famous statement of Angela Merkel, who was the German Chancellor at the time, was “Wir schaffen das” (“We can do this”). This became a symbol of Germany’s humanitarian response. However, problems and crises arose regarding accommodation, housing, employment, language education, and social integration for the refugees who came to Germany. Social divisions emerged over integrating migrants into German society, while fears about public security and the spread of crime also grew. This migrant crisis in Germany contributed to strengthening right-wing and anti-immigration forces. Regarding the 2015 migrant crisis, the AfD party strongly criticised the German government’s immigration and refugee policy.
The AfD party, which until then had been a small political group that could be ignored, began to receive significant political support after the migrant crisis, and later became Germany’s main far-right, Nazi political force. The leader of the AfD party, Alice Weidel, emphasises: “Within the first one hundred days of my government, I will close the borders, remove all social welfare benefits for migrants, and implement the largest deportation programme ever carried out in Germany.” The AfD party, which assures that it follows a strict anti-immigration policy, promises to completely stop illegal immigration, strictly control Germany’s borders, establish a system to consider asylum applications outside Germany, immediately deport people whose asylum applications have been rejected, impose strict restrictions on dual citizenship when obtaining German citizenship, and select even legal immigration according to Germany’s economic needs.
The AfD party emphasises this in the manifesto it presented for the 2025 federal elections. The AfD, which strongly opposes the European Union, is a pro-Russian party. They promise that once they come to power, they will remove all sanctions imposed on Russia. Many political commentators point out that Russian President Putin uses the AfD party as his pawn against European unity. The AfD party is accused of receiving Russian funding. The AfD party, which proposes that Germany should leave the European Union as well as the euro currency, says that it will hold a referendum for this purpose. In addition, the AfD party proposes to reintroduce compulsory military service for German citizens. Like fascist, far-right parties currently operating in the world, AfD also considers science and its knowledge as an enemy. In particular, AfD, which rejects global warming as a hoax, says that it will abolish the climate policies currently implemented in Germany. Its policy manifesto states that it will suspend the Renewable Energy Act (EEG) and give priority again to producing energy through the burning of petrol/diesel and coal.
The AfD party emphasises the traditional family and German cultural identity. According to their policy manifesto, German families that have more children will receive government financial assistance and welfare support. Under an AfD party government, priority will be given to protecting the German language and culture, while the integration of migrants into German society is considered a compulsory factor. Everyone living in Germany will be compelled to accept the “German Leitkultur”, that is, the main German cultural traditions. The AfD party’s programme of building the traditional German family corresponds with the policies of Hitler’s Nazi Party (NSDAP). When the AfD party was formed in 2013, it expressed strong opposition to the homosexual community. From Hitler and Mussolini to Donald Trump, every fascist Nazi party that emerged has considered the homosexual community as its enemy. Therefore, there is no need to be surprised by the AfD policy.
However, after it was revealed that AfD leader Alice Weidel is a lesbian woman, the policy held by the party regarding homosexuals moved towards a softer form. Alice Weidel says that her party protects homosexuals. At the same time, the AfD party is opposed to same-sex marriages. They promote a traditional family model consisting of a father, mother, and children. A lesbian woman leading a party opposed to same-sex marriage is a clear contradiction. The most humorous contradiction here is that AfD leader Alice Weidel and her lesbian partner also have two male children. The traditional family model declared by the AfD party is a family consisting of a father, a mother, and children. But Weidel lives in a family unit consisting of a lesbian couple and children.
Her partner, Sarah Bossard, is a woman born in Sri Lanka. When she was an infant, she was adopted by an evangelical pastor in Switzerland and his wife. She grew up in Switzerland from childhood and even today Sarah Bossard lives in Switzerland with the two children. The sexual partner of AfD leader Alice Weidel, who threatened to send migrants back to wherever they came from, is herself an immigrant who came to Switzerland from a Third World country. There are clear contradictions between Alice Weidel’s personal life and some of the political positions of the AfD party. These contradictions exist among fascist far-right figures from Adolf Hitler to Donald Trump. Although American President Trump labelled immigrants as criminals, poor people who do not know how to properly handle the English language, and a threat to the security of the country, all three of his wives are immigrant women. His current wife worked as a nude model, and even today she cannot handle the English language in an American manner.
The victory achieved by Alice Weidel’s AfD party in the state of Saxony-Anhalt is political capital for the federal elections scheduled to be held in 2029. This election result is a clear warning to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and his Christian Democratic Union (CDU). It is also a challenge directed at the traditional political mainstream. According to a recent opinion poll conducted by Infratest Dimap, regarding the 2029 federal elections, the AfD party is in the lead. Twenty-eight percent of the people support them. Germany’s two traditional major parties, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD), are behind them. New Nazi leaders and fascist figures around the world have publicly supported Alice Weidel’s AfD party throughout the recent period. Elon Musk, who is considered a leader of the neo-Nazi movement, stands out here. During the 2025 German federal election, he addressed the German people at AfD party rallies and called on them to vote for the party. American Vice President J.D. Vance, who is far-right, white Christian, racist, and a fascist more extreme than President Trump, also called on people to vote for the AfD party in that election. From Argentine President Javier Milei, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Matteo Salvini, to France’s Marine Le Pen, leaders with far-right, white supremacist, racist, and fascist tendencies supported Alice Weidel’s AfD party. Russian President Putin worked behind the scenes for the victory of the AfD party.
There is a close political relationship between Donald Trump’s fascist, Nazi-aligned MAGA followers and the AfD. An official AfD delegation attended the ceremony marking President Trump’s second inauguration.
At last year’s Munich Security Conference in Germany, a gathering of world leaders and senior international officials, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance held a special meeting with AfD leader Alice Weidel.
In the 2025 German federal election, the AfD received 20.8 percent of the vote and came in second, winning 152 parliamentary seats. Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) came in first, received 28.6 percent of the vote, and won 208 parliamentary seats. The opportunity for the AfD to become involved in power was denied through the formation of a coalition government between the Christian Democratic Union and the Social Democratic Party. However, the power gained by the AfD is noteworthy when compared with the 10.8 percent of votes it obtained in the 2021 federal election, as it succeeded in achieving a 10 percent increase. No other party managed to achieve such growth, and the number of its parliamentary seats increased by 69. The political danger that became evident in 2025 was not taken seriously by Germany’s traditional parties. Its consequences could be seen in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.
Adolf Hitler did not become German Chancellor overnight. His Nazi Party (NSDAP) contested six major elections between 1924 and 1933 and increased its share of the vote from 2.6 percent to 43.9 percent over a period of nine years. The AfD party is also travelling along the same path. The far-right fascist AfD party will make a major leap in the 2029 federal election.
As British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once said, “Those who fail to learn from history are destined to experience it again.”
