(Lanka-e-News -03 Oct 2026,4.00 A.M.) Colombo Magistrate Pasan Amarasekara has issued notices ordering ten doctors from the medical board treating retired Major General Suresh Sallay to appear in court on October 6. Sallay, the former Director of the State Intelligence Service, is in custody in connection with the Easter Sunday terror attacks. The order followed a motion filed by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The Fort Magistrate's Court was recently told, based on a medical board report on Sallay's health, that his heart is swollen. The court was informed that a special device costing about Rs. 4 million in public funds has been fitted to his heart to control the condition. After treatment in the intensive care unit, he was moved to General Ward 42 of the Colombo National Hospital after the CID reported these facts to the court.
At an earlier hearing, the court had ordered the hospital's Director, Dr. Sampath Indika Kumara, to appear and explain why a report on the suspect's health, and the reports relating to the five-member medical board, had not been submitted. The Director appeared accordingly. As he is a state official, Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris appeared for him, and for the CID, at the Attorney General's request.
The Additional Solicitor General told the court that he maintains his earlier position that Sallay's hospitalisation is nothing more than a medical conspiracy. He submitted that, although a hundred days have passed since a court order was issued, the suspect has still not given investigators the passwords to his computer, claiming he cannot remember them. He remarked that Sallay lacks the memory an intelligence chief should surely have.
He further told court that the cardiac treatment has been completed, but that the suspect has a dental problem said to be linked to his heart. He alleged that the doctors are continuing to provide Sallay with luxury facilities in the hospital.
The Magistrate asked the Director whether other patients are detained and treated in this way for a dental ailment. The Director replied that the doctors have recommended that problems could arise if the antibiotics given for the root canal treatment of the tooth in question were stopped.
On the basis of those medical recommendations, Sallay has been permitted to remain in hospital for treatment until the 28th of this month. The Director stated that once the treatment is completed, he can be discharged to a suitable environment.
The Additional Solicitor General informed the court that the CID then intends to take the suspect back into its custody and resume investigations and questioning as usual.
The ten doctors are due to appear before the Magistrate on October 6.
