(Lanka-e-News -04 Nov 2026,11.30 P.M.) The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has moved to launch a full-scale investigation into the properties and assets of former Energy Minister Engineer Kumara Jayakody and current Deputy Minister of Public Security and Attorney-at-Law Sunil Watagala.
According to sources within the Commission, the decision followed discrepancies found when the Commission compared the two politicians' previously submitted asset and liability declarations with their newly submitted ones. The Commission has therefore deemed it necessary to conduct a comprehensive audit and further legal inquiries to establish what additional assets have been newly recorded, what their legitimate sources are, and how the properties were acquired.
Sources further confirmed that the investigative procedures are being conducted independently, in accordance with the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
The backdrop to the investigations is a written complaint filed with the Bribery Commission last September by civil rights activist Jamuni Kamantha Tushara de Silva. The complaint targeted six prominent government figures, including Cabinet Ministers Bimal Rathnayake, Wasantha Samarasinghe, Sunil Handunnetti and Nalinda Jayatissa.
However, following observations that emerged from preliminary inquiries into that group, reports indicate that only the files of Engineer Kumara Jayakody and Attorney-at-Law Sunil Watagala have been selected for a full-scale investigation at present.
Meanwhile, apart from these property-related probes, Jayakody faces another legal process. He has been issued a notice by the Presidential Commission investigating coal transactions and recently appeared before it to present relevant facts.
