(Lanka-e-News -08.Aug.2025, 11.00 PM) President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has issued a stark warning to political opponents and would-be agitators, declaring in Parliament yesterday that any conspiracy against the state will be met with the full force of the law – or with new laws if necessary.
“We know the knock at the door and the beat of the drum,” he told MPs. “So if anyone intends to conspire against the state, there will be no room for it. If the law is weak, we will make new laws – or defeat such plots by any means.”
The President had come before Parliament to outline what he described as the stabilisation of the national economy, but his address quickly pivoted to an uncompromising denunciation of subversive activity.
“You can go to the villages, engage in politics, organise – those are your rights. I have no reason to stop you,” he said. “But if you are preparing a conspiracy, if you are ready to create chaos in the country when the law comes to you, that will not be allowed.”
Dissanayake claimed security forces had already disrupted such plans, citing the recovery of T-56 rifles in Kiribathgoda and the discovery of 81 hand grenades hidden in a water tank in Vavuniya – allegedly destined for Colombo.
“What was this meant for?” he asked. “Plots can take many forms – using underworld networks, driven by defeated groups seeking revenge. Let it be remembered: no one will be allowed to obstruct our good-faith journey to rebuild this country.”
“If the law is weak, we will make laws,” he continued. “We cannot allow defeated politicians to plunge the country into conspiracy because they have lost their privileges, fear punishment, or want to protect their thefts and crimes. That is why governments are formed – to stop such plots.”
He pointed to history as evidence: “The government fell in 2001 through a conspiracy. In 2018, the same happened. In 2022, Ranil became President by manoeuvring his way in – I do not call that a conspiracy. But our history is full of them. Even when governments are working, there are those plotting against them.”
Dissanayake said intelligence agencies were closely monitoring criminal explosions in different areas: “We are investigating thoroughly. How do these happen? What is the objective?”
“Whether inside or outside the state, in Parliament or beyond, if anyone tries to sabotage this effort to rebuild the country, we will take every possible step to defeat them,” he vowed.
“Democracy remains – the media may write what they like, political meetings may be held freely, village-level politics can go on unhindered. But there will be no space for plotting against the state.”
The President also turned his attention to what he described as “malicious narratives” around the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings, singling out recent speculation involving Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith.
“There is talk that the Cardinal did not attend morning mass that day because he knew about the attack – this is how conspiracies are created,” Dissanayake said. “These are not mere words. Those who speak them must take responsibility for every word.”
He also rebuked opposition MP Udaya Gammanpila for claiming the arrest of a former navy commander was based on testimony from the LTTE. “The arrest was carried out under a court order,” the President said. “Do not create distortions – we understand what is happening.”
“Remember,” he concluded, “we can tell the difference between the knock at the door and the beat of the drum. If anyone, anywhere, is even thinking of hatching a plot against the state, there will be no room for it.”
