(Lanka-e-News -15.Nov.2025, 11.00 PM) Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) Lalith Pathinayake, who served as the head of Administration at Sri Lanka Police Headquarters, has been removed from his post following disciplinary action. The move comes after a leaked telephone conversation between him and a regional journalist — a call which prompted the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to lodge a formal complaint with the National Police Commission.
The National Police Commission has now taken action, stripping Pathinayake of the powerful administrative role — a post regarded as the closest and most influential position to the IGP.
However, Pathinayake will continue to serve as the SDIG in charge of the Central Province.
To fill the vacancy created by his removal, the National Police Commission has approved the appointment of SDIG Sanjeewa Dharmaratne , previously the SDIG Western Province, as the new SDIG – Administration.
With the IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya currently overseas, Senior DIG- Sanjeewa Dharmaratne is also functioning as the Acting Inspector General of Police.
In addition to the above reshuffle, the National Police Commission has approved several other senior transfers and appointments across the service.
Accordingly:
SDIG Sanjeewa Dharmaratne, previously Western Province, has now been elevated to **SDIG – Administration.
SDIG S.C. Medawatta, who served as SDIG – Training and Advanced Training, has been appointed SDIG – Western Province.
SDIG Ranmal Kodituwakku, currently SDIG – Crimes and Traffic, has also been assigned to oversee the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Division.
SDIG T.C.A. Dhanapala has been transferred from the Northern Province to take charge as SDIG – North Central Province.
SDIG G.M.H.B. Siriwardena, who had been covering duties both at Police Headquarters and the North Central Province, has now been transferred to serve as SDIG – Northern Province.
Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) N.L.C. Sampath Kumara has been appointed DIG – Special Task Division.
