(Lanka-e-News -13.Feb.2026, 11.10 PM) A couple in a car have been killed in a shooting incident in the Akuregoda area of Thalangama.
Two people who arrived in a car opened fire at around 5 pm today(13) and fled. The shooters arrived in a silver Blue Bird car and fled in the same car. The shooting was carried out with a T-56 firearm.
The deceased in the shooting attack are lawyer Buddhika Mallawarachchi (46) and his wife Wellala Arachchige Nisansala (41), residents of the Ledola Watta area in Walallawita.
The lawyer who was in the front driver's seat of the car and his wife who was in the front seat next to him were shot and both died inside the car, police say.
Police say the lawyer who died in the shooting was a lawyer for Karandeniye Sudda, a notorious drug trafficker and organized criminal. Police also suspect that Karandeniye Sudda himself may have orchestrated the murder as he had provided his client's information to a criminal named 'Loku Patty'.
Shootings and murders occur between underworld groups, but the shooting and killing of a lawyer representing underworld leaders is a special case.
Thalangama Police are conducting investigations.
The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has strongly condemned the tragic shooting and assassination of an Attorney-at-Law and his wife earlier today in Akuregoda, carried out by a group of unidentified assailants.
In a statement, the BASL noted that while the full circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be investigated, attacks of this nature pose a grave threat to the rule of law and the administration of justice.
The BASL urged the Police to conduct a thorough and expeditious investigation into the incident, apprehend those responsible, and ensure that the perpetrators are brought before the law without delay.
The BASL further called on law enforcement authorities to take concrete and effective measures to prevent the recurrence of such violent acts in the future, stressing the need to safeguard legal professionals and uphold public confidence in the justice system.
The BASL’s statement dated February 13, 2026 was signed by its President Rajeev Amarasuriya and Secretary Chathura Galhena.
