Lanka-e-News -(12 March.2026, 5.30 a.m.) Lanka e News website Editor-in-Chief Sandaruwan Senadheera, who returned to Sri Lanka yesterday (11) afternoon after 16 years abroad, was arrested by the police at the Katunayake International Airport.
Police sources say that the arrest was made because he was named as a suspect in a case being heard before the Gampaha Court. It is reported that a statement has been recorded from Senadheera, who is being held at the Katunayake Police Station, and he is scheduled to be produced before the court this morning (12).
Following the disappearance of 'Lanka e News' journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda and the arson attacks on the institution in 2010, Lanka e News editor Sandaruwan Senadheera left the country for safety and sought political asylum in England.
He was in poor health due to a sudden illness that occurred about 5 years ago. To build the good political culture he had hoped for, he took steps to provide strong ideological support for the National People's Power through the 'Lanka e News' website to bring the current National People's Power led by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna government to power in the last presidential election and the general election.
Police sources say that Senadheera was arrested on a warrant issued against him by former Gampaha Chief Magistrate Kavindhya Nanayakkara during the 2017 trial for assaulting former 'Rivira' editor Upali Tennakoon.
President Anura Dissanayake, when he visited England before contesting the last presidential election, invited Senadheera, who was ill, to visit his home in England and return to Sri Lanka. Anura Dissanayake had told Senadheera that he would be welcomed with a red carpet if he did so. He accepted the invitation and, having great hopes of going to Sri Lanka, returned to Sri Lanka yesterday with the intention of seeking Ayurvedic treatment for his illness.
