(Lanka-e-News -2026.March.25, 4.00 AM) Iran has denied reports that it launched a long-range missile attack on the British-American joint military base on the island of Diego Garcia. Iran has described the attack as an “Israeli false flag attack.” A ‘false flag attack’ is a covert attack that appears to be carried out by an adversary but is actually carried out by a different party. Its purpose is to mislead the adversary, justify military intervention, or create confusion.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghai made the above denial on Monday after NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said Israel’s claim that the missiles fired at Diego Garcia were Iranian intercontinental ballistic missiles could not be confirmed, saying the allegations reflected a pattern of “disinformation.”
“The recent disinformation campaign by Israel to appease the United States and pressure NATO members to support their notorious illegal war on Iran, which even the NATO Secretary General refuses to endorse, speaks volumes: the world is completely tired of these tiresome and scandalous ‘false flag’ stories,” Esmail Baghai wrote on his Twitter account.
Reporting on the “false flag attack,” American and Israeli media said that Iran was behind the attacks, meaning it had ballistic missiles with a range of 4,000 kilometers (2,485 miles) or more. The media was trying to scare Europe by reporting that they could reach London, the capital of the United Kingdom, or Paris, France, and that European countries would be more likely to support Israel and the United States in a war against Iran.
But earlier this month, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in an interview with the American radio station NBC, “We deliberately limited our missile production to a range of less than 2,000 kilometers [1,242 miles] because we don’t want anyone else in the world to feel threatened by us.”
British Home Secretary Steve Reid said on Sunday that Britain did not indicate that Iran intended to reach Britain with its missiles, or that it could.
The UK-US military base is home to nearly 2,500 mostly American personnel and has supported US military operations from Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as attacks on the Houthis in Yemen.
Israel’s military chief, Eyal Samir, said Iran used a “two-stage intercontinental ballistic missile with a range of 4,000 kilometers [2,485 miles]” to target the US-UK base.
While Washington and Tehran were engaged in negotiations through Oman, Israel and the United States attacked Iran about three weeks ago, assassinating the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Oman, the mediator in those talks, had said that a deal was “possible,” but the war broke out when Oman was also attacked. Oman is an Iranian ally. A similar attack was also carried out on Turkey, another Iranian ally. Iran has also said that both attacks were “false flag” attacks by Israel, which pretended to be carried out by Iran.
