(Lanka-e-News -10.April.2026, 3.30 AM) The ongoing 48-hour island-wide strike launched by the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has caused severe inconvenience and distress to patients across the country. Hospitals are overwhelmed, and many patients who came seeking treatment have been left helpless.
We made several attempts to contact GMOA officials to understand the situation, but were unable to reach them.
The stated reason for the strike is the Health Ministry’s decision to appoint post-intern medical officers. However, historically, such appointments have always been handled by the Health Ministry as an administrative matter. This process does not fall under the authority of a trade union.
It is therefore concerning that the GMOA, a bloodsucking union, insists that the Ministry consult them before making these appointments. Administrative decisions should remain within the purview of the Ministry, not unions. On this basis, the strike appears unjustified.
Furthermore, it is important to remember that all doctors have benefited from free education funded by public money. With that comes a primary responsibility to serve and treat patients, especially during times of need.
We also spoke to several doctors, and opinions are divided. Some believe the strike is justified, while others feel that it unfairly impacts patients and reflects deeper political influence.
At the end of the day, patients should not be made to suffer due to administrative or union disputes.
