(Lanka-e-News -05.Aug.2026, 10.45 PM) Former Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, who was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Bribery or Corruption and produced in court on charges of using employees recruited to the Presidential Secretariat for his personal purposes during the presidency of Ranil Wickremesinghe, was remanded until the 18th of this month by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama. The Bribery Commission issued a statement in this regard as follows:
Godage Akila Kariyawasam, acting as the Senior Advisor to the President (Decentralized Administration), employed three out of the four employees recruited under the pretext of being for his staff, in a petrol station belonging to him, while another employee was not employed for the duties of the office allocated to the position, and received Rs. 2,768,836,.14 and was arrested by the investigating officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption on August 05, 2026 at around 1.45 pm on charges of committing corruption by causing a loss to the government.
The arrested suspect was remanded until 18 after being produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court.
It is reported that during his tenure as the Minister of Education, Akila Viraj had recruited his party members for various lower-level positions in schools in the country and used them for party activities instead of their respective duties.
