(Lanka-e-News -31.Aug.2026,11.45 PM) Two weeks ago, Lanka e-News exclusively revealed that a Dubai and Pakistan-based drug syndicate had dispatched a container of crystal methamphetamine, known as "Ice," toward Sri Lanka — a substance traffickers increasingly favour over heroin because of its far higher profit margins.
Senior Superintendent of Police Kamal Ariyawansa, Director of the Central Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB), had received credible intelligence that a container passing through a Sri Lankan port terminal was concealing a large consignment of methamphetamine.

The container had been declared as being in transit and remained unclaimed at the port terminal. A source close to the investigation had warned at the time that any delay by police would have allowed the traffickers to clear the container using falsified documentation.
Acting on this intelligence, CCIB officers obtained a court order to inspect the container. Inside, they found methamphetamine wrapped in towels — a total of 486 kilograms, with an estimated value of Rs. 8 billion.
Police arrested the importer, a Tamil businessman engaged in the potato and onion trade, along with a Muslim suspect and two Pakistani nationals who were found accommodated at a hotel in Colombo. Investigations were ongoing at the time of our original report.
Lanka e-News's own investigation had pointed to Mohamad Siddik, a Pakistan- and Dubai-based drug lord, as the individual behind the shipment. As noted in our earlier coverage, Siddik maintains extensive contacts across Pakistan, is fluent in Dari/Afghan language, and is married to a Pakistani woman.
